LET'S ACT NOW

What with the state of the economy, we're all feeling the pinch this year.  Sadly, charities are holding their collective breaths, fearing that charitable giving this holiday season will be down at a time when the number of needy is up.  A charity needs money, clothes, and toys.  How about free books?

I have a plan, but I need your help to carry it out.
Specifically, I'm thinking of the families who will be spending the holidays at a hospital in which a family member is being treated.  It's a lonely time for them.  A frightening time.  A good book might help get them through it.

I have a stash of good books, and I'd like nothing more than to donate them to lending libraries at hospitals across the country.  Here's where you come in.  If you make the phone call, I'll donate the books and the shipping costs.  There will be no cost to you, just a little bit of time spent on an act of philanthropy.  One phone call would do it.  You won't even need to leave home.

What do I want you to do?  Call your local hospital and ask to be connected to its lending library (or whoever runs it).  Once there, ask if they have room for a donation of books and, if so, how many they can use.  Then you contact me with the hospital name, your lending library contact, the shipping address (no PO Boxes), and the number of books they'd welcome.  I'll take it from there.

If you act now, we can send the books to arrive for the holidays, when hospitals in need are looking for ways of cheering up patients.  A free book could do it.  As readers, you all understand this.

Will you help?  Your generosity would be a precious gift.

Barbara, what a wonderful thing you are doing. What about nursing homes? So often people are isolated and alone in nursing homes, what a wonderful world would be opened to them thru your books.

Just a thought.

That's a good thought, Jan. How about audiobooks for nursing homes? I have audiobooks in my stash. You get me the same info as above, and I'll send some, okay?
