Huh? Magic Carpet? Well, isn't this a magical, mystical trip we take each time we go online? Think about it. With a few clicks, we're anywhere in the world. Maybe you don't see it that way. Maybe, if you've been surfing the web since you were a wee tot, you see the online world as your backyard. I don't. I surf every day of the week, yet I still see the World Wide Web as something of a miracle.
And the things it allows me to do?
And the things it allows me to do?
I'm researching my next book right now, and, wow, it's amazing what I
can learn right here at my computer. And my website? Who'd a thought
I'd have my own website? Who'd a thought I'd be getting letters from
readers all over the world through the site?
In the ten years I've had this site, it's been through several renditions. It started with a piece of folk art on the home page. Remember that? Then it went on to have art that rotated each month. For the past two years, it's had a picture of me standing in front of a landscape with brooding clouds overhead.
Now, with the impending publication of While My Sister Sleeps, It's time for a change. That's what my recent photo shoot was about. It went really, really well, by the way. These pictures are going to give an entirely different feel to the site. I'll be formally receiving the images today, and once I pick my favorites, my web designer will start recrafting the site. He and I have been discussing lots of possibilities.
Hence my question. What's your magic carpet? Uh, how do you surf the web? Oh, dear. Well. WHAT MACHINE DO YOU USE?
Why do I care? With this redecoration of my site, we're thinking of expanding the site's footprint by 25%. That'll give you more to see. But, increasingly, the instruments we're using to view the web are smaller. So I'm curious. Do you visit this site on a desktop? A laptop? A BlackBerry? An iPhone? Something else entirely?

Dear Barbara,
Thanks for trying to improve.
I use a laptop and a Desk top.
Best,
Esther
First, I must tell you that I think of that folk art quite often!! I loved it - not that I don't enjoy your current setup, but that folk art was truly memorable. Have you ever considered doing maybe a set of mugs with the four folk art seasons on???
Also, it has happy memories because it was honestly one of the first websites I ever discovered, when I "found" the internet!! Isn't that funny!
Anyway, to answer your question, I mostly use a laptop, though we also have an ancient desktop which I use when my four-year-old is using this machine.
It amazes me to think that my children don't know an internet-less world. Less of a magic carpet for them, it's just something that has always been there!
Dear Barbara,
For your information and or curiosity I visit
your website via a desktop.

I have been reading your BLOG from when it was on the older one-pictures, recipes...etc...this one is more difficult as the letters/characters one must type in are often not clear...not worth it to take the time-sorry...you still remain one of my two favorite authors in the world...I use my laptop (which goes with me on my travels to keep in touch with students I teach in high school and college)...keep writing...
Desktop. I know enough about the others that I could own them and use them, but I like coming in here and checking out what's going on in the world outside of Princeton, IL, but I don't like to be connected to the heartbeat of "the times" every single second.
Oh, I second that mug idea!!!
I use a laptop to surf, a desk top to write...it's best to keep the two separate! :)

I use a laptop to surf and work on drafts, a desk top for serious work. And I add my vote for those mugs... I loved the folk art.
Ah, do I remember the old folk art? Do I miss it? Yes, yes and yes! It was so reminiscent of all that speaks to me of New England. I am glad that I printed many of the recipes that used to be on the web site. I have a PC and my husband has the laptop with him on the road. Do we email each other? No-he uses it to locate customers, find phone numbers and uses the Google maps to see if where he is going can accommodate an 18 wheeler. It is wonderful to have access to so much information with the click of a mouse.
