What do you do for a cold? What makes it shorter? Is there anything that will prevent it?
I'm asking for a reason. When my kids were little, I had colds constantly. Then they passed the constant-cold phase, I started taking Vitamin C, and I had no more than one cold a year or two. Now the colds are back. If this is the price of being a Grammi to very young grandkids, I'll gladly pay it. But how to deal?

Last season's colds all ended with laryngitis. I mean, the total
inability to talk. This was not fun when I had book group phoners
scheduled, in some instances back-to-back.
A writer writes. Right? She doesn't have to talk. Wrong.
Here I am, heading off on a plane this afternoon to talk at a Friends of the Library event tomorrow in Ocean City, New Jersey, and I have a cold. It started five days ago, and I think I'm through with the worst of the red eyes and the sneezing. The stuffiness is still there. But I'm worried about my voice. I'm the main event tomorrow. I'll be talking for an hour, then doing a question-and-answer session, then signing books, which means talking with each reader who comes by. Laryngitis is only one problem. The other is feeling like Typhoid Mary and giving this cold to everyone I see. I'll be Purelling my hands often. And I spent the weekend resting, not talking, and I'll talk as little as possible today. So far my voice is holding up. But I'm worried.
Any hints you all have - even homemade remedies for preserving a voice - are welcome. Please tell me. What do you do to treat a cold as we wait for a cure?

Hi Barbara,
I also have little kids and especially the little one has been getting sick constantly, so I have been searching and trying different things.
To prevent colds, I find the Emergen-C packets work great. You dissolve them in water. Now you can even find them at your local pharmacy, CVS etc. Also, take echinechea drops(not tablets but drops, they work better)during fall and winter months.
The whole thing about avoiding colds is keeping your immune system high. There are echinechea infused tea also, you can find these at health food stores. These are all to strengthen the immune system.
When you feel like you're coming down with a cold then you can try taking Oscillococcinum by Boiron (found in all drug stores. It's an all natural homeopathic remedy. It helps reduce the duration of the cold.
For the voice, tea with lots of lemon and honey helps. Also, a spoon of honey coats the throat. There are some teas in health food stores called "throat coat" these helped one of my friend with laryngitis.
I hope these help. Feel better.
Hi Barbara! I hope you are feeling better, this comment is a little late in coming. i was a pre-school teacher for three years and spent a better part of those years sick until I found my magic recipe: vicks vapor (tiger balm or J.T. Walkins rub actually works better) on your temples, upper lip, cheeks, chest, and back. Next take a hot bath with Johnson & Johnson menthol bath. It works wonders! I also can't get away from apple cider vineagar and honey in equal parts...I haven't come across a cold that can beat this action plan :)
I make MAGIC TEA for my family and it usually knocks any cold on it's butt ;)
Actually, my children like it so much they ask for it often so it's not considered 'medicine' to them and therefore when they NEED it, they'll drink it happily ;)
